Your Backyard Is Lying To You About What Is Possible

Why the “Standard Method” creates artificial boundaries in our landscapes and our minds.

The third contractor didn’t even finish the measurement before he dropped his clipboard, sighed at the grey expanse of the retaining wall, and started walking back toward his white pickup truck. He didn’t say goodbye, exactly.

He said, “Can’t dig here,” over his shoulder, which in the dialect of the modern trades is a complete sentence, a legal waiver, and a funeral rite all at once. The clipboard hit the concrete with a sharp, plastic clatter. It sounded like the end of a long-held ambition.

The Psychology of the Boundary
